Saving for College
Need money for college?
The “Saving for College” program is open to Junior and Senior High School students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and an excellent alternative to a student loan.
About the program
The Saving For College program allows students to begin earning while still in High School. Firstly, we want to help students from low-income communities in Oakland see college as an attainable goal. Secondly, we want to make sure they have all they need in order to start and continue all the way through a 4 year college of their choice.
The CORE idea of the programs is to help students earn their way through college, rather than relying on a student loan or government handout. The fundamental principal is that “You can achieve anything you want, as long as you’re willing to work for it”. It teaches ‘self-reliance’, fosters entrepreneurial skills and gives students real world work experience which will stay with them forever (for many, this will be their first ‘real’ job).
There are secondary benefits to the program as well.
- By earning their way and paying for their education in ‘advance’ they can dedicate more time to their studies during college.
- They will avoid common ‘student loan’ debt which plagues a lot of students fresh out of college.
- They will be selling a food product which is healthy and inexpensive. Fruits and fresh, low-glycemic fruit juices which are highly recommended for teens especially.
How it works:
La Placita provides students with their very own Mobile Fruit vending cart for 9-12 months and gives students all of the tools necessary to sell fresh, healthy fruits and natural, low-glycemic fruit juices in public schools, parks and recreational areas throughout the summer and school year. Students gain useful entrepreneurial skills and learn how to manage and save money.
Students have the potential to generate estimated profits of 50-80%. Profit gained from the program will be used to pay for college tuition. Students that successfully complete the program will also given a $1000 Book Scholarship during their second year of college.
The Saving For College program is currently in a pilot stage which means it is being funded by the generous contribution of sponsors and donations alone so we only have a few available openings. Our goal is to help as many low-income, high performing Oakland students earn money for college as we can. If you would like to contribute to the Saving For College program, please email us today.
Why take out a student loan, when you can earn money for college on your own?
La Placitas’s “Saving For College” program is a genuine alternative to a long term student loan. We want young adults to get started off on the right foot, not in debt.
The consequences of defaulting on Student Loans can be detrimental to a college graduate. It can affect your credit rating for years after you’ve graduated, in some cases your employer will be served with a legal garnishment notice requiring them to forward 15% of your wages to pay towards repayment of your loan and in severe cases, your income tax refunds could be withheld and applied toward your loan repayment. Collection costs up to 19.5 % could be added to your student loan!
By choosing to work and EARN money for college, rather than taking on a costly student loan, you have a golden opportunity to start your life on the right foot.
The Saving For College program can help you save thousands of dollar year for college. To inquire about the pilot program, email us at help@laplacita.info or call 510-698-4178
